SHIFTER PARTS
UPPER BEZEL

PART # 203 UNIT COST $24.99

This is the Upper Chrome Bezel that fits at the top of the Pistol shifter above the plastic handles. It was made from the same material as the original unit was, from die cast zinc. It is normally the first part installed on the shifter after refinishing. When this bezel is installed, it is then ok to install the shift pattern. If you look at the pistol shifter itself, you will see a nib at the top of the shifter. The way the factory installed the upper Bezel was that they placed it on top of the shifter, and then they peened the edge of the steel nib over the square in the upper Bezel. This is how the factory held on the Upper Bezel. To remove this Upper Bezel, you must break out the old Shift pattern, and then with a Dremel or small die grinder, you must grind off this peened over edge. My Reproduction Upper Bezel is made slightly different than the original unit, in that it is a friction fit. You do not have to peen the nib over the square in the Upper Bezel. To install my reproduction unit, you first square up this nib by removing this peened over edge on the nib. A few strokes with a file will do. Then place a small bead of JB Weld in the square and along the channel where the top of the pistol shifter will fit. Again, a small bead. Very small. Then place the Upper Bezel on top of the Pistol shifter. While holding the bottom of the Pistol shifter so it does not move, have an associate place a block of wood on top of the Upper Bezel, and have them hold it there while you tap on the wood till the Upper Bezel seats all the way down. The JB Weld is there as insurance, as the press fit will keep the Upper Bezel in Place.

LOWER BEZEL

PART # 206 UNIT COST $24.99

This is the chrome part that is below the plastic handles. Its function is to make a smother transition from the handles to the Pistol shifter. It is made of the same material as the original piece was, from die cast zinc, and chrome plated. To remove this part, first remove the plastic handles. You can then see that this part is held in place with a roll pin. To remove this roll pin, you must support the finger on the backside of the Lower Bezel with a piece of wood. Do not support the Bezel on the side it will be seen, just support the finger where the roll pin is located. While holding the Pistol shifter there, with a punch, tap this roll pin out. You may need an assistant to help in this operation. To install the new lower bezel, support the finger with a block of wood, and gently tap in the new roll pin supplied with the bezel. Tap it down until it is at or just below the surface of the finger. Check opposite side to ensure it has not protruded beyond the surface of the finger.

SHIFT PATTERN INSERTS

These reproductions fit in upper Bezel of all Pistol style shifters from 1970 to 1974. All patterns are styled after the original. There are minor differences from the original, but are not noticeable. They all have a black background with white letters. Originally these Shift Patterns were installed with a 2-sided tape. After 30 or so years of use, this tape has become like epoxy and it is almost impossible to remove the old shift pattern without breaking. To remove the old shift pattern you must either drill thru the plastic and pull the shift pattern out, or crack the old shift pattern and remove the pieces. Installation of the Shift Pattern is done after the Upper Bezel is installed on the Pistol Shifter. To install the Shift Pattern, place a small dab of silicone inside the Upper Bezel at the 6 and 12 position. Let the handle sit for several hours to allow the silicone to dry.
